About The Project
DC Appleseed has been working since 2001 to ensure that the nonprofit CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the largest health insurance company in the mid-Atlantic region, meets its obligation to the public as a charitable and benevolent non-profit organization. We have concluded that the company could and should be spending substantial amounts of money to improve public health -- approximately $50 to $100 million annually in the DC area alone. We are working with the DC Council and a broad coalition of other groups to pass legislation needed to ensure that the company meets this public health obligation. Pro bono support for our efforts has been provided by Covington & Burling LLP and Harkins Cunningham LLP.
