Child Support

About The Project

More than 65% of District children have cases open in the child support system -- more children than are in the District's public and charter schools combined. Yet only one in four of these children received any child support payments in 2006. In 2007, DC Appleseed released an extensive report on the District's child support system, examining best practices in other states, and recommending changes that could be implemented in the District to improve the likelihood that children will get the financial support they need and deserve. Mayor Fenty called the report excellent and indicated his intention to implement the recommendations. DC Appleseed will continue to work with DC's Attorney General and others to improve the District's child support system. Pro bono support for our efforts has been provided by Crowell & Moring LLP and Kilpatrick Stockton LLP.
