About The Project
In 2004, after high levels of lead were found in DC's drinking water, Councilmember Carol Schwartz invited DC Appleseed to examine this problem and issue recommendations.
We released our report in December 2004 recommending better regulations that are more protective of public health. One of our key recommendations -- that the District have its own Department of the Environment -- has been adopted. The city is planning an independent water testing program at the behest of DC Appleseed. Pro bono support for our efforts has been provided by Weil, Gotshal & Manges, LLP, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, Navigant Consulting, Inc., and FTI Consulting, Inc.
