Supreme Court DC Handgun Case

About The Project

The Supreme Court struck down the District’s ban on handguns in the home in the 2007 Heller v. District of Columbia decision. The D.C. Council has since amended these laws to conform to the ruling, but Congress has threatened to relax them well beyond what the Supreme Court required.  DC Appleseed is advocating to preserve the Council’s authority to enact sensible gun control laws consistent with Heller, in which we filed an amicus brief.  We are monitoring lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of the District’s revised gun laws, as well as post-Heller litigation across the country. We are also exploring legal options to protect local gun laws from undue congressional interference.
