Advisory Board releases transition plan for an independent D.C. community college

On September 19th, an Advisory Board chaired by DC Appleseed’s Walter Smith presented recommendations to Mayor Gray and D.C. Council for moving the UDC’s Community College to independence.

The issuance of the report follows actions taken by the D.C. Council last June adopting recommendations made by the Advisory Board at UDC’s budget hearing on April 23, 2012.  These include legislative requirements for UDC to: improve its financial situation by developing a right-sizing plan by October 1, 2012 that reflects the size and needs of UDC’s student population; and submit a request to its accrediting body by November 1, 2012 for the community college to be recognized as a branch campus of UDC.

T
he Advisory Board report finds that branch campus designation is a critical first step for achieving independence for the community college.  The report also recommends that UDC undertake an institutional right-sizing effort to improve its financial situation, and explains why a right-sizing plan is necessary to both achieve branch campus status for the community college and strengthen the flagship university.
